The
APL
Panama
text
by connie ellig
From the time it ran aground on December 25, 2005 until it was refloated
on March 10, 2006, the container ship APL Panama
was the topic of world news. Although the sight of the huge vessel stranded
on Ensenada’s Playa CONALEP beach originally drew thousands of spectators,
few were present when the ship was finally freed. But one thing for sure
is that the APL Panama will be a part of local legend for many,
many years!

Although
crowds have dwindled at Playa CONALEP, the site of the grounded container
ship, thousands of Mardi Gras revelers cheered at the sight of the APL
Panama float created by Ensenada businesses for the parades of “Carnaval
Histórico,” celebrated February 23-28, 2006. Photo by David Hopps.
