Two Not-To-Miss Art Expositions at
Ensenada's CEARTE

Several hundred art aficionados were treated to an explosion
of vibrant colors on the evening of the Fourth of July. The display was
not
pyrotechnical but it was equally as spectacular: It was the
inauguration of
José Carrillo Cedillo’s “Primero
Sueño (First I Dream)” Exposition at
Ensenada’s State Center of the Arts (CEARTE).
The exhibition consists of 15 large paintings
including a
huge, 12-foot by 7 1/2-foot mural, all created by this international
award
winning artist between the years 2000-2008. All are acrylics on canvas
or wood,
painted with saturated colors so richly intense that they virtually
leap off
the walls of the Sala Ernesto Muñoz Acosta. The paintings are
largely
figurative, often with whimsical representations of Frida Kahlo,
mermaids,
robust women, cats and/or the artist himself. Through his imaginative
subject
matters, use of brilliant colors and uniquely personal style that is
both
expressionistic and naïf, José Carrillo Cedillo entices
viewers into his own
world, a sensual world that is magical, mystical, harmonious, humorous,
emotionally stirring and vastly entertaining. “Primero Sueño”
will remain on
display through August 26, 2008.
A resident of Ensenada for the past 23 years, Carrillo
Cedillo was born in Mexico City, where he studied fine arts at the
Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), specialized in
ceramics at the Instituto
Nacional de Bellas Artes, and completed a post-graduate course in
ceramic
sculpture at UNAM. Since 1962, he has participated in 35 one-man art
exhibitions and more than 100 collective shows with his paintings,
engravings,
drawings, sculptures, ceramics and photography and has received
numerous awards
at city, state, national and international art competitions. His most
recent
award is for “Foxilandia,” which won second place in the sculpture
division of
the “XVI Bienal Plástica de Baja California” Exposition that is
currently on
exhibit at CEARTE in the adjacent Sala de Exposiciones.
The works of José Carrillo Cedillo can be found in private
art collections in Mexico, the United States, Germany, Argentina, Costa
Rica
and Holland. Some of his public works, including two mural paintings
and
life-size bronze sculptures of Christopher Columbus and a native
big-horn sheep,
can be viewed at the Riviera Cultural Center, which is located across
the
street from CEARTE. To further explore the artistic vision of

The “XVI Bienal
Plástica de Baja California,” which opened
on June 12, is another not-to-be-missed exposition at CEARTE. The
exhibition
showcases 94 of the most outstanding paintings, sculptures, drawings
and
graphics submitted to the “XVI Bienal Plástica de Baja
California” art
competition held in November 2007. Sponsored by the state government
through
the Instituto de Cultura de Baja California (ICBC) and the Consejo
Nacional
para la Cultura y Artes (CONACULTA), the XVI Bienal Plástica
fine arts
competition received a total of 357 entries by 105 Baja California
resident
artists. Ensenada is the third stop – after Mexicali and Tijuana – in
this
exposition’s statewide tour.
In the category of painting, Alida Cervantes of Tijuana
received the first place award and a prize of $50,000 pesos for her oil
on
canvas “Autorretrato con Peluca (Self-Portrait with Wig).” Tijuana
artists
Alejandro Zacarias Soto and Roberto Romero Molina acquired second and
third
place, respectively.
In the discipline of sculpture, Tijuana’s José Hugo
Sánchez
obtained first place and a prize of $50,000 pesos for “Sólo
Quedó el Sombrero (Only
the Hat Remained)” and “Cráneo Baleado (Shot-up Cranium),” both
created from
spent shell casings of various calibers. Ensenada artists José
Carrillo Cedillo
and Ganimedes Aaron Dante Guerrero won second and third place,
respectively.
In the drawing division, Pablo Enrique Castañeda Alvarez of
Mexicali acquired first place and $50,000 pesos for his three ink
drawings “La
Ropa Colgada en la Frontera (Clothes Hanging on the Border),” “La
Búsqueda
sobre la Frontera Desconocida (The Search along the Unknown Border)”
and “El
Caso Extraño en la Aduana III (The Strange Case at Customs
III).” Second and
third place, respectively, were awarded to Iván Ruiz Zavala of
Tecate and Roberto
Rosique of Tijuana.
In the field of graphics, Jaime Ruiz Otis of Tijuana
received first place and a prize of $25,000 pesos for “Registro Grande
010
(Large Register 010)” and “Registro Grande 009 (Large Register 009),”
two
industrial plate impressions on cotton paper. Mónica Elizabeth
González of
Mexicali and Miguel Ramón Tamayo López of Ensenada were
awarded second and
third place, respectively.
Other Ensenada artists whose paintings, sculptures, drawings
and graphic works were selected for exhibition were: Salvador
Vílchez, Enrique
Avilez, Rita Beadle, Ananada Cecilia Ruiz Padilla, Julio Angeles Labra,
Francisco Merino and Alejandro Elías Pérez Muñiz.
The “XVI Bienal Plástica de
Baja California” will remain on display through August 4, 2008.
