A collection of thirteen wine barrels painted and decorated by prominent Baja California artists was on display from September 21-October 11, 2010 at Ensenada’s Centro Estatal de las Artes (CEARTE). Participating visual artists included Carlos Coronado, Gerardo Yepiz “Acamonchi”, Julio Orozco, Foi Jiménez Jurado, Jorge Sánchez “Jofras”, Alfonso Arámbula, César Borja, Claudia Ramírez, Ron Glaubitz, Fernando Flores, Estela Hussong, Alfredo Gutiérrez and Jaime Ruiz Otis.

borja toroHeld in conjunction with La Caja Galería of Tijuana and the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT), “Arte en Barricas (Art on Barrels)” was an imaginative collective project that is based on the fact that the vine and the wine constitute elements of the cultural and historic identity of Baja California. The casks were donated by different regional wineries which lodged the painters for several days to immerse them in the wine production processes. Each artist was free to express his or her own artistic vision. The result was a remarkable collection of diverse creativity featuring barrels that were imaginatively painted, carved, sawed, drilled and/or disassembled.

On October 29, 2010, many of the casks were auctioned off at CECUT at prices ranging from $580-$1,083dlls. each. A portion of the proceeds was used to cover exhibition expenses; the remainder was given to the artists. However, several barrels are still available for purchase. For more information about buying one of the remaining painted barrels or the “Arte en Barricas” project, contact Arturo Rodríguez in Tijuana at La Caja Galería, tel. (664)686-6791; e-mail
