“Dust to Glory” Premieres in Ensenada
text by connie ellig; photos by david hopps
photo movie posterAs a prelude to June’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500, Los Angeles-based SCORE International hosted a private screening of “Dust to Glory” at Ensenada’s Cinemastar movie theater on May 26. Directed by Dana Brown, “Dust to Glory” is the full length feature documentary released in April 2005 that chronicles the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race that started and finished in Ensenada in November 2003. The one-night Ensenada premiere was the first time that the English language film was shown in Mexico; a Spanish-subtitled version is expected to debut this summer in Latin America.

SCORE President and CEO Sal Fish and Mexico General Director Oscar Ramos were on hand to greet more than 200 invited guests that included race drivers, sponsors, members of the press, tourism officials, VIPs and dignitaries like current Ensenada Mayor César Mancillas and former Mayor Jorge Catalán, who was the acting mayor while “Dust to Glory” was being filmed. After the screening, guests were treated to Tecate beers and a savory buffet at Papas & Beer Sports Bar.

“Dust to Glory” accurately captures both the action and the reality of the Baja 1000. The film features interviews with the adventurous breed of drivers who compete in the grueling desert race, behind-the-scenes glimpses of their diligent pit crews, and colorful coverage of the local populace gripped in the excitement of racing fever. The cinematography is outstanding, especially the close-up, action-packed, dust-in-your-mouth race sequences and the lush aerial footage that highlights the solitude and splendor, majesty and mystique of the Baja California landscape.

“Dust to Glory” is emotional, affectionate, humorous, dynamic and wildly entertaining. But most of all, it is a compelling, uplifting commentary about the human race that transcends all borders and cultural boundaries.
