March 3-8: Carnaval de Ensenada 2011 “Fiesta Tropical”
One of the city’s largest and most popular events, Mardi Gras attracts a multitude of national and international visitors. Enjoy regional foods and libations, games and rides, live entertainment, music and dancing in this year’s festival zone located at the northern end of Blvd. Costero (Lázaro Cárdenas) between Av. Miramar & Av. Castillo, open from approximately 6pm-2am on Thursdayand Friday, from 4pm-2am on Saturday through Tuesday. A family style country festival with parades, rodeo contests, cultural exhibitions, regional foods, live entertainment and a Saturday night Cowboy Camp & Bonfire. It is held at the site of San Miguel Arcangel de la Frontera Mission at Km. 65.5 on the Tijuana-Ensenada Free Road (from Toll Road, take La Fonda exit). The fiesta kicks off on Saturday with rodeo demonstrations at 3pm; a special presentation by folkloric dancers from Nogales, Sonora at 4pm; the 14th Annual State Calabaceado Dance Festival at 4:30pm; and a bonfire, Kumiai song and dance, and local Calabaceado Dance Contest at 8pm. June 3-5: 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500
The legendary desert race in which more than 250 cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs from 25 U.S. states and 10 countries traverse nearly 455 miles of rugged mountain, forest and desert terrain in their attempts to “beat the Baja.” This year’s race starts and finishes in front of Ensenada’s historic Riviera Cultural Center on Blvd. Costero (Lázaro Cárdenas), leaving and returning through the arroyo wash. On Friday, June 3, the pre-race SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection takes place on the boulevard from 10am-6pm. On Saturday, June 4, motorcycles and ATVs start the race at 6am, followed by trucks and cars at approximately 10am. Replacing the Primm 300 held in Nevada, this new race for 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks covers the same 252-mile course that was used in March for this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Día de Muertos is one of Mexico's most traditional religious holidays as deceased loved ones are remembered with special altars, flowers, candles and their favorite foods. November 17-20: 44th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000
Chronicled in the 2005 full length feature documentary “Dust to Glory,” the Baja 1000 is the legendary desert race in which more than 300 cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs challenge 692.82 miles of rugged mountain, forest and desert terrain in their attempts to “beat the Baja.” This year’s race starts and finishes in Ensenada. On Thursday, November 17, the pre-race contingency, tech inspection and SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway take place from 10am-5pm in front of Ensenada’s historic Riviera Cultural Center on Blvd. Costero (Lázaro Cárdenas). On Friday, motorcycles and ATVs start the race in front of the Riviera at 6:30am, followed by trucks and cars at 11:45am (or four hours after the last ATV leaves the line). With the course open for 32 hours in the elapsed-time race, the fastest racers are expected to cross the finish line in front of the Riviera in approximately 14 hours.
