February 7-12: Carnaval Ensenada 2013 “Festejemos México (Let’s Celebrate Mexico)”
One of the city’s largest and most popular events, Mardi Gras attracts a multitude of national and international visitors. Enjoy regional foods and libations, games and rides, live entertainment, music and dancing in this year’s festival zone located at the Plaza Cívica de la Patria (“Three Heads Plaza”) on Blvd. Costero (Lázaro Cárdenas). Traditional festivities include the Coronation of the Adult’s Royal Court and the Quema de Mal Humor (Burning of Bad Humor) on Thursday; the Coronation of the Children’s Royal Court on Friday; the Costume Ball on Saturday; and the Baile del Marido Oprimido (Oppressed Spouse Dance) on Monday. Over 90 yachts in various classes participate in this 62-nautical-mile race that starts at 11am on Friday morning in San Diego and officially finishes at 2pm on Saturday in Ensenada. Award presentations are on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, yachts have the option of competing in the 8th Annual Todos Santos International Yacht Regatta, a 20-nautical-mile sailing race around Todos Santos Island. November 2: Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead in Mexico)
Día de Muertos is one of Mexico's most traditional religious holidays as deceased loved ones are remembered with special altars, flowers, candles and their favorite foods. A sweet bread, pan de muertos, can be found at bakeries, and candy skulls, coffins and skeletons are featured at dulcerías. Celebrations and candlelight processions are held in local cemeteries.
