Heavy
Metal in Ensenada!

The port of Ensenada skyline has changed for the better if you look across
the harbor from the Ventana al Mar boardwalk. Two new container-loading
gantries have been added to the two that have been operating on the dock
for several years now. They arrived aboard barges all the way from Seattle,
Washington in March 2005.
One hundred feet high and each weighing in at over 780 tons, the six
million dollar cranes can reach out a hundred feet over a docked container
ship and maneuver 40-ton loads. A pair of smaller, mobile units will soon
join the freight-moving equipment. Along with the recent dredging, Ensenada
will now accommodate fifth generation cargo vessels. Maersk Sealand ships
will be arriving every two weeks from Southeast Asia ports like Hong Kong
and then sail on to other ports in Mexico and Central America before crossing
the Pacific to deliver and load additional trade.
These investments bode well for Ensenada. The dot on the map will become
larger, more goods will be available and services will improve. And this
boosts everybody’s socio-economic benefits even higher.
