The tip of the Punta Banda peninsula was the hottest spot in Baja during
Los
Gordos 10th Anniversary Chili Cookoff on August 14, 2004. Hundreds
of chili aficionados sampled the diverse concoctions prepared by the fifteen
teams mainly comprised of full time Punta Banda residents, part time Punta
Banda residents, friends of Punta Banda residents, and friends of friends
of Punta Banda residents.
Top honors of the day went to the Frickin’ Dyer Chili Team of Pat &
Jeff Fricke and Ardelle & Jack Dyer of Rancho La Bufadora, annual competitors
who, at a previous cookoffs, had won the dubious distinction of cooking
“the worst chili ever.” But persistence (and a new recipe) finally paid
off. This year the Frickin’ Dyers received over $100dlls. as their percentage
of the purse, plus complimentary tickets to the J.D.

Second Place Chili and Best Booth were awarded to the S.O.B. Chili Team
of Kim and Thias Holden and Sherry Carleton of Long Beach, CA, who were
visiting friends of friends at Punta Banda’s Campo Villarino. Third Place
went to “Serrano Sue” Graham, another avid annual competitor from Rancho
La Bufadora.
