Held
on May 30, 2004, “Ensenada de Todos - Suma de
Culturas” (aka “International Festival”) was a veritable smorgasbord
of cultural and culinary delights. Nearly two dozen local community groups
hosted booths featuring the arts, crafts, foods and beverages from the
various states and ethnic cultures of Mexico as well as the countries of
their heritage including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain,
Russia, Japan, the United States, Panama, Argentina and Cuba. Hundreds
of visitors packed Ventana al Mar Plaza below the monumental Mexican flag
to enjoy the fun-filled family atmosphere, regional folkloric dances, and
activities such as origami classes and chess matches.
Descendants
of Ensenada’s founding families were on hand with historical exhibitions
of family photos, documents, heirlooms and antique furniture. Among the
participants who shared their family’s history were Luis Goldbaum and his
wife, Leticia (pictured in the photo). Luis’ grandfather, David Goldbaum,
a mining engineer from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, came to Ensenada in 1887.
In 1888, he registered his first claim, the “Casina” iron mine, which led
to subsequent gold and copper mining concessions in El Alamo, Real del
Castillo and San Antonio del Mar in the northern district of Baja. In 1917,
Governor Esteban Cantú appointed David Goldbaum land commissioner
of the northern district. Goldbaum’s map of Baja California, considered
the best of that era, plus written reports of the demographics, economy,
agriculture and topography of the rural settlements under his jurisdiction
are considered invaluable contributions to the history and geography of
the peninsula. Under the administration of Governor Abelardo Rodríguez,
David Goldbaum served as political advisor and later as governmental delegate
of Ensenada from 1927 until his death in 1930 at age 71.
Organized by Ing.Yukio Nishikawa, the “International Festival” was an
impressive grand finale to Ensenada’s 122nd Anniversary Celebration that
featured a series of special events during the entire month of May.
