Punta Morro Captures Top Honors at 2006 Mushroom Festival

Held on June 11, 2006, Ensenada’s 9th Annual Mushroom
Festival attracted hundreds of enthusiasts who sampled an array
of creative fare that included mushroom quesadillas and tamales, mushroom
salad, mushroom fajitas, beef and mushrooms in wine sauce, huitlacoche
empanadas, clams with mushrooms au gratin, and a wide assortment of pastas
and pastries containing different varieties of mushrooms. Serving up these
savory concoctions were local restaurants like Antares (Hotel Coral y Marina),
El Cid, El Olivo, El Mesón de Don Fernando, El Rey Sol, La Comadre,
La Finca, Laboratorio Gastonómico, Las Cazuelas, Monique, Punta
Morro, Cafetería UABC, La Fonda of La Misión and Habana Banana
of La Bufadora.
Chefs
from many of these restaurants engaged in the annual culinary competition
of mushroom-based dishes judged by the Asociación de Chefs de Baja
California. Scoring the highest total points in the three competition categories
(Mushroom Soup, Mushroom with Meat, and Mushroom with Poultry), Restaurant
Punta Morro captured the overall grand trophy. In recognition of its attractively
decorated booth and outstanding promotional presentation, Restaurant Punta
Morro also received the trophy for Best Image.
In addition to the overall and Best Image awards, trophies were presented
for:
Best Mushroom Soup – 1st place: Laboratorio Gastronómico,
2nd: El Olivo, 3rd: Punta Morro
Best Mushroom/Meat Combination – 1st place: El Olivo, 2nd: Punta
Morro, 3rd: Laboratorio Gastronómico
Best Mushroom/Poultry Combination – 1st place: Punta Morro, 2nd:
Laboratorio Gastronómico, 3rd: Habana Banana

Organized
by the Ensenada-San Quintín CANIRAC Chamber of Restaurants in conjunction
with the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) and the
sponsorship of the Ensenada Tourism Board, the Mushroom Festival took place
along the two-block area of Calle Primera (Av. López Mateos) between
Av. Alvarado and Av. Castillo. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about
mushrooms, their cultivation and medicinal benefits at the booth hosted
by UABC, which offered a variety of educational exhibitions. The colorful
street fair featured plenty of live music of different genres, Grupo Modelo
beers, L.A. Cetto wines, and Hacienda Don Procopio tequila/wine/fruit liqueurs
as well as an interesting variety of food and service-related booths and
displays by sponsors like Café Sabarex, Miel Ositos, Refri-Ahorro,
Coca Cola and Smart & Final.
