On the evening of October 25, 2007, Ensenada
was the site of the grand opening of the 165th Starbucks
coffeehouse in Mexico
since
2002. The capacity crowd, which filled the store’s outdoor terrace and
the spacious
interior, wildly cheered as Ensenada Mayor César Mancillas and
his wife, Beatriz,
accompanied by Baja California State Government Investment Promoter
Juan
Francisco Siqueiros, Starbucks Marketing Director Claudio Triches,
Starbucks
Regional Director José Jorge Murga, and Ensenada Starbucks
Manager Ramón Flores
Torres, performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. For the next few hours,
guests
enjoyed the convivial atmosphere, professional service, live music,
complimentary appetizers and pastries, and nonstop shots of Starbucks’
cappuccinos,
espressos, mochas, lattes, Frappuccinos® and other signature
beverages.
A joint venture between Starbucks Coffee
International and
Alsea S.A. de C.V., the leading operator of fast food restaurants in Mexico, the Ensenada Starbucks is the
third to
open in the state of Baja
California.
The first two, located in Tijuana,
were inaugurated in August and September this year. According to
Starbucks
Marketing Director Claudio Triches of Mexico City,
Ensenada
was
the logical site to further expand operations in Baja. “Ensenada is one
of the key cities in the
region. Our goal is to share the Starbucks experience and our passion
for
coffee with the local community,” he said in an exclusive interview.
Triches
also noted that Starbucks eventually plans to open in Mexicali
and in additional cities in Baja
California. Other Starbucks locations in Mexico
currently
include Guadalajara, Puebla, Cuernavaca, Toluca, Mexico City,
Monterrey,
Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Morelia,
León, Saltillo,
Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Cozumel.
Starbucks is well known for its high quality
coffee beans which
are grown in various world regions in Latin America, Pacific Asia,
Africa and Arabia. For more than
twenty years, Starbucks has been
purchasing Mexican coffee, mainly from producers in Oaxaca,
Chiapas and Veracruz.
Through its partnership with
Conservation International, Starbucks is helping to preserve the
sensitive
ecosystem of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas. This is the flagship site
for
Conservation International’s Conservation Coffee™ program, which works
with
local farmers to preserve the natural environment through use of
improved coffee-production
techniques, including growing coffee under the protection of shade.
“To contribute positively to our communities and our
environment” is one of the guiding principles of Starbucks’ mission
statement.
To honor its commitment to social responsibility, the Ensenada
Starbucks will
be supporting the health and wellness needs of the Casa Hogar del
Anciano, a local
non-profit Home for the Aged that provides shelter and basic services
to those
who have no family or financial resources. The public is invited to
assist
these efforts by donating soap, toilet paper, personal hygiene items or
cleaning products at the Ensenada Starbucks on Blvd. Costero
(Lázaro Cárdenas)
#278-2C near Av. Macheros. (This was the former site of Pizza Hut.)
Hours of
operation are 7am-11pm daily. Be sure to take a moment to relax, enjoy
the
friendly ambience, and warm your soul with an exceptional cup of
specialty coffee! (Starbucks Cards can be used in the U.S., Mexico,
Canada, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.)
