On
the evening of May 6, 2005, the new La Vendimia
International Yacht Club was officially inaugurated in Ensenada,
Baja California, Mexico. More than 110 members and local dignitaries attended
the gala celebration that was hosted by the club’s founder and Commodore,
Katrina Tinoco, a bilingual Brit from Liverpool who, with Mexican husband
Andrés, operates La Vendimia Restaurant on Av. Riveroll #85, a few
blocks from Ensenada’s waterfront.
After
introductory speeches by Commodore Katrina, Vice Commodore Harry Benson
and Rear Commodore Troy Lassoe, Ensenada Mayor César Mancillas and
his wife Beatriz performed the official ribbon cutting ceremony and rang
the Commodore’s bell to formally announce the launching of the yacht club.
Juan Carlos Ochoa of Ensenada’s Port Administration (API) and Julio D’Acosta
of Puerto Salina La Marina were among the local dignitaries present.
While
the evening progressed, the spirit of camaraderie grew among the international
membership whose origins include Mexico, the United States, Denmark, England,
Scotland and New Zealand. As the live music and libations flowed, several
guests danced atop the bar while others formed a conga line that weaved
throughout the restaurant’s dining area, lounge and patio.
Membership in La Vendimia International Yacht Club is open to fun-loving
seafarers of all nationalities. For more information, contact Commodore
Katrina Tinoco by e-mail.

Ensenada’s Restaurant La Vendimia was a center of festivities on November
11 as more than 80 invited guests and members of La
Vendimia International Yacht Club gathered to celebrate the
club’s six-month anniversary. Camaraderie flowed as boaters and landlubbers
from both sides of the border renewed and strengthened friendships while
munching on a buffet of delectable appetizers and dancing to the live music
of Sergio & Claudia.
As
the highlight of the evening, Beatriz de Mancillas, the president of the
municipal chapter of DIF, presented the yacht club’s founder and commodore,
Katrina Tinoco, with a handsome plaque in recognition of the club’s service
to the community. The club then presented DIF with two Braille machines
that were acquired through the efforts of members Rusty and Jolene Beard
and Alice Rynd.
During its first six months of operation, La Vendimia Yacht Club members
and members of its sister club, the American Legion Yacht Club of Newport
Beach, donated more than $7,000dlls. worth of school supplies to DIF, which
distributed the much-needed items to children in grade schools, kindergartens
and pre-schools in Ensenada and San Quintín. DIF (Sistema para el
Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) is the national program of social assistance
that focuses on strengthening and developing the family core in the local
community.
“One of the ongoing commitments of La Vendimia International Yacht Club
is to provide schoolchildren with the basic supplies necessary for their
education. Pencils, erasers, markers, notebooks, construction paper, glue
sticks and backpacks are among the items most needed,” states Commodore
Katrina. For more information about La Vendimia International Yacht Club
or to make a donation for schoolchildren, e-mail
Katrina.
